I chose to read chapter 12 of “They Say, I say”. This chapter goes into a little bit of depth of how to find ways to advance class discussions. The chapter begins with a common issue of a class discussion, with this issue being that people tend to not be able to find something to say that builds upon the previous topic. After introducing this they go into how to frame your comments as a response to something that was already said previously. They also talk about how to change the subject of the conversation properly, if it is needed. Finally, they talk about how to be more explicit in speech than writing, with this meaning that you bring up previous points to remind the rest of the group what was said previously. I chose to read this chapter out of any other because I feel like that whenever we have a group conversation in class, I tend not to give my ideas as much as I think I should. This is not because I get nervous speaking, it is because I do not think that my ideas do not always relate to the topic being conversed about. Reading the section about how to change the subject of the conversation, gave me some insight on how to do just this in class conversations. I hope that reading this chapter of “They Say, I Say” will help me greatly in the future.

  1. This was a super interesting choice for a chapter! I hope that you feel more empowered to bring up your own topics of conversation–even if they don’t directly relate to the conversation at hand. I know that’s not exactly what the chapter covers, but it’s okay to do.
