Multimodal Statement

Before I started to write my multimodal paper, I chose to incorporate a picture of a dance class that includes the teacher and very young, beginner dancers. This is because I wanted the reader to see something that I talked about later on in the essay, at the beginning so it have a cyclical sense to it. I also chose to put it at the beginning just so the reader could get a sense of what might be coming. I chose this picture specifically because it shows how one person can tell a story to another group of people through teaching or dancing, and one child may see the story differently than another, which supports my ideas on the uniqueness of narratives. Also, since dance is a great way to tell a story without words, this can lead to different interpretations of what story the dance is trying to tell. This uses the spatial and visual modes of communication. I also included my own narrative project into the final body paragraph to show what an actual dance teacher (the interviewee) thinks about how life stories, and her identity as a whole, can be interpreted through a wide variety of modes of communication and story telling. These modes can include music, singing, writing, speech, and in this case, dancing. I chose to put this in the final body paragraph of my paper because I think it ties in with the picture that I placed at the beginning of the paper since the paragraph, and video, is about how dance can shape someone’s life and how they identify themselves as an individual. Finally, it gives me a source that I can use to further my ideas on how narratives can be interpreted in many different ways and from different sources of storytelling. This uses the spatial and audio modes of communication.
