I feel that I am achieving my annotation goals with ease. Annotating comes easy to me.

  1. Surrounding Context

“Necessary Edges: Arts, Empathy, and Education” was published originally by the World Post in January 2014 in Davos, Switzerland. From reading the biography prior to the paper, I admire Ma’s skills in music and writing altogether. He began performing when he was only five years old and he has seventeen Grammy awards, as well as many other awards. He also graduated from Harvard University, which is obviously a very prestigious school. He is a very established author, musician, and songwriter and this makes him very trustworthy in my eyes.

2. Circumstantial Context

I agree with most of Ma’s thoughts, but I am not much of a fan of Arts. I feel that they are necessary, but they can spread important ideas among multiple cultures. This spread of knowledge makes more of the world more knowledgeable of other people’s cultures and ideas. I think that this is very important to how our world advances in  education in the future. My purpose for reading this text is to learn about different ideas of learning. These ideas are STEM or STEAM, where I believe that STEAM is more purposeful.

3. Intentional Context

Yo-Yo Ma believes that the arts have a very important role in today’s education, as they help advance our knowledge of other cultures and beliefs. These ideas are supported by the idea that empathy has its own part in today’s education by bringing balance and equilibrium to all things. Ma also pushes the idea of STEAM education as the superior form. STEAM brings art into science, tech, engineering, and math, to create a very well-rounded form of education that today’s world really runs off. Ma wants us to know that there are many different perspectives that can be looked at regarding someone’s life. These perspectives have edges and a core, with the edges or borders being able to be crossed. Ma has many fantastic points that advocate for a change of knowledge in our world.

  1. I’m so glad that annotation comes easily to you. Your notes look great!

I want to highlight what you wrote, here: “[the arts] can spread important ideas among multiple cultures. This spread of knowledge makes more of the world more knowledgeable of other people’s cultures and ideas.”

You touch on something that we failed to discuss in class. This is a great point, and you may be able to build an entire paragraph around this idea in your paper.
