One thing that stuck out to me while reading Julie Beck’s “Life’s Stories” is that narrative is the default mode of human cognition. I feel like while this might be relatively true, there must be other mode of human cognition and I think that Beck should have gone into a little depth of what these are. Another thing that stuck out to me is how simple or complex a story can be and how this can affect how the audience feels about the person the story is about. These stories can take inspiration from other people and this can affect how they write their stories, leading to an overall effect on the audience. This creates a sort of a loop which I think is rather interesting. The last thing I found interesting is the fact that some stories should not be told while some should be told and that some stories have positive “redeeming” values while others have a negative value. This can lead to a plethora of different formats that a story could take and this leads to the many different types of story that we see today. While these positive stories would be thought to bring out the good in the people, while the negative would do the opposite, both can have positive outlooks if used correctly.

  1. Outstanding understanding of text. I would have used quotes to specify more into what you are talking about but other than that everything checks out and i think your views on these topics that make you sit up makes one think about it more than they already are. Which isn’t bad at all because it’s a great way to continue a back and forth conversation or debate.

  2. Ryan, after reading and your blog post and reviewing our annotations from the article, I noticed how we made a lot of the same points. Overall, I think we both agree that there are many different types of stories that Beck had addressed in this article. I felt like when I read the article I made a lot more personal connections between myself and the text, although I felt like you really focused on all the information. After reading all the facts that you soaked up from the article, your blog actually helped me to understand the text better because it is so easy for me to find ways to personally connect to text that sometimes I often overlook the important information and the text that I actually needed to know. I do agree with you that Beck should have gone into detail while explaining certain things. I do agree with your thoughts on human cognition as well, I believe that although our thoughts are important to help tell stories, other factors do have an effect on how the stories are formed and then addressed into the world!

  3. Ryan,
I was taken with the following musings: “One thing that stuck out to me while reading Julie Beck’s “Life’s Stories” is that narrative is the default mode of human cognition. I feel like while this might be relatively true, there must be other mode of human cognition and I think that Beck should have gone into a little depth of what these are. Another thing that stuck out to me is how simple or complex a story can be and how this can affect how the audience feels about the person the story is about.” I feel like there is a lot to potentially explore in the space these observations/questions provide. I’m curious if you feel that Strawson spoke to these topics.
